The three first-year introductory courses give the student a thorough grounding in Latin grammar so that he/she can read connected prose by the end of the third quarter. The 500-level course is preparation for the graduate reading knowledge examination required by some departments; credit does not count towards the degree.

In the second year the student is introduced to original works by Latin authors, such as Caesar and Cicero, and the poets Vergil and Ovid. LAT 213 will continue to emphasize the reading skills developed in Latin 212. We will be translating excerpts from Vergil’s Aeneid, and will pay particular attention to poetic meter and analysis. Class work will consist of in-class translation, scansion, regular quizzes, and two exams. Successful completion of LAT 212 or high school equivalent is a prerequisite.

We will read from the first book of Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita over the course of the quarter. Our emphasis will be on improving Latin reading skills and understanding the work of the greatest of the Roman historians in its original cultural context. Class-work and evaluation will consist of in-class translations, supplementary readings in English, brief papers, translation quizzes, two comprehensive examinations, and a final research project. The course prerequisite is successful completion of Latin 351 or two years of college-level Latin or equivalent high school work.
