Research Tools

Listed below are a number of databases for doing research in the fields of Classics and World Religions. Please note that, because of licensing restrictions, these databases are available to members of Ohio University only, not the general public. If you are a member of Ohio University and are using these databases from off-campus, before you can connect you will need to do a brief login to identify yourself as part of Ohio University.

Research Databases

Both Classics and World Religions

Between them, these two databases cover well over a century of major scholarly journals in both disciplines. AHCI begins coverage with 1980 and is updated weekly. Periodicals Index Online begins with the first year of each journal and continues into the 1990s.

Classics

L’Année Philologique is the major database for scholarly materials in Classics. The online version covers 1969 to the present; Alden Library has printed volumes in the Reference Collection going back to 1924. Department member Lisa Carson is the director of the American office of L’Année Philologique. Dyabola complements L’Année Philologique for the study of ancient Rome. The Perseus Project is a huge collection of images and texts for the study of ancient Greece. The Thesaurus Linguae Graecae has Greek texts for ancient and Byzantine Greek literature.

World Religions

Two article databases for the study of religion. ATLA covers more than 500 journals; Religion and Philosophy Collection, around 300 (most of them full-text).


Electronic Journals

Journals from JSTOR

JSTOR (short for Journal STORage) is a consortial project whose goal is to provide online archives of scholarly journals back to the beginning of each journal’s publication. Generally speaking, the most recent 3-5 years of a given journal are not available through JSTOR.

InfoTree Listings

InfoTree is the Library’s “database of databases.” It is an easily searchable and browseable listing of the most important resources (mostly online, though it includes records for microform sets and a few major printed reference works). If you Login to InfoTree, you can create a set of bookmarks and also “subscribe” to notifications whenever new records are added to any InfoTree categories of interest to you. We have major online encyclopedias for both Classics and World Religions. Please note that the one for Classics, New Pauly Online, is only partially complete in the English-language version at this time.

Through OhioLINK we have access to a number of online reference works from Oxford University Press.
