The Department of Classics and World Religions offers programs of study in the following areas:
- 1. Greek and Latin Languages
- The student can choose to focus on either the Greek or Latin language or on both. This track emphasizes the languages and the ancient literature. Programs of study are available for both majors and minors.
- 2. Classical Civilization
- The student can choose to focus on Greek or Roman culture. This track emphasizes learning about the culture through studying literature in translation and the material culture from art/archaeology. Majors have an ancient language requirement whereas minors do not.
- 3. World Religions
- The student can choose to focus on the study of world religions. This track emphasizes both a theoretical knowledge of the components and dynamics of religions and a specific knowledge of some religious ideas and practices.
- 4. Honors Program (part of the Honors Tutorial College)
- The tutorial program in Classics is designed to give highly motivated students a substantial overview of the disciplines that constitute “Classical Studies” and at the same time equip the student with both the linguistic and archaeological training which is essential for expert study of Greek and Roman antiquity.
A broad range of courses focusing on the ancient Mediterranean world (including literature in translation, humanities, and archaeology) and on world religions are offered by the Department. Related courses are also offered through the Departments of History, Art History, Sociology, Geography, and Philosophy.
